Bilingual Providence College students enrolled in SPN 205Spanish for Heritage Speakers participated in the RI Latino Biz Web Design Project created by the Rhode Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (RIHCC) and the Rhode Island Israel Collaborative (RIIC) with sponsorship from the Consulate General of Israel to New England and the Wix web development platform.

The project consisted in designing bilingual Spanish-English web pages for small Latino-owned businesses. It was implemented in the course as a service-learning component where students utilized their bilingual abilities to tackle some of the problems faced by small business owners.

One of the goals of SPN 205 is to help students learn to appreciate the value and the advantages their bilingualism entails. Through this project, students utilized the Spanish they already know and new knowledge they were acquiring. Students were able to help business owners who otherwise do not have the economic and linguistic knowledge to design and/or to pay for a web site. Additionally, while enhancing and reinforcing their bilingual capacities, students helped small businesses to have more visibility and to be more competitive.
